Jessica and Paul Yates

Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland—Minister for Roads, and Minister for Regional Transport)—Thank you to Jessica and Paul Yates of Millers Forest for the extraordinary courage and community spirit demonstrated during the devastating floods of May 2025. Upon receiving an early morning call about their neighbour's horse, Portia, trapped and struggling in rising floodwaters, Jessica and Paul sprang into action. Navigating treacherous conditions in their tinny, they reached the distressed animal. Without hesitation, Jessica entered the freezing water, cutting through tangled fencing to free Portia and guide her to safety. This act of bravery is emblematic of the resilience and solidarity that defines our region. Despite facing their own challenges, including caring for 30 agisted horses on their property, the Yates family prioritised the welfare of their community and its animals. Their selflessness, alongside the efforts of many others who assisted in rescuing stranded livestock and supporting neighbours, underscores the strength of our collective spirit. Thank you, Jessica and Paul, for your heroism in times of adversity.
