Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland)—World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims this November 21st has many objectives. This Day provides a platform for road traffic victims and their families to remember all people killed and seriously injured on our roads. This Day will focus on the reduction of traffic speeds. Low speeds have the potential to prevent many deaths and serious injuries, in particular those of pedestrians and all other vulnerable road users – children, elderly and those living with disabilities. This Day also provides an opportunity to acknowledge and praise the vital work, and the unsung heroes, of the emergency services who far too often must try to cope with the aftermath of an accident while providing critical and urgent care. On this Day of Remembrance I encourage our community members to stop for a few moments and think of those they may have lost, or who have been injured in road accidents. I encourage the people of Maitland to try to reduce accident numbers by observing speed limits and road signage, and to be aware of their surroundings and possible dangers when driving.
