Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland)—National Recycling Week is from 8th to 14th November. This week we are all invited to look at existing resources in a new way. Can we see the value of what we already have? Can we rethink our impulse buys, and to actively consider a new life for the items we already own? Is our older smart phone now our Grandmother's new video calling wonder machine? Are last winter's coats brimming with warmth for someone else? Is that older series tablet now a much needed new communication tool for someone who is unable to purchase one? Items we no longer value can be extremely valuable to someone else. We just need to rethink and reframe them. Reducing our personal waste and re-using items, not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill, it benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and our need for new materials. National Recycling Week aims to help all Australians take waste, recycling and re-use issues into our own hands. I commend the people of Maitland for stepping up to these particular challenges as a community and hope we all continue to think about new ways to re-use and recycle.
