Community Recognition Notice - Hume Housing O'Hearn Park Mural Project

19 May 2022

Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland)—It was great to be involved in an artistic community collaboration recently at O'Hearn Park in Tenambit, an important public space for our local community which has been in a derelict state for some time. Maitland City Council started in recent years to improve the playground facilities, but something was missing, so in a collaboration between the local community and Hume Housing, UP&UP were engaged to complete some murals in the park. Recently I joined the Mayor of Maitland Clr Philip Penfold, Tony Townsend from Port Stephens Hunter Police District, Tara Dever, Liz McEntyre and Tracy Bevan from Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council at a mural painting day. Seventy local residents were given the opportunity to make their own contribution towards the project – which set out to reduce anti-social behaviour, and I thank the local residents who allowed their fences to be painted as part of the project. Today, O'Hearn Park is a kaleidoscope of colour, highlighting the vibrancy of this resilient community. A big congratulations goes to the Tenambit community for their hard work and enthusiasm and all of the project partners, for making it possible.
